Book the exam (PSI)

Create a PSI account with your legal name as it appears on your ID, then schedule California Life, Accident & Health or Sickness (or Life-only / A&H-only) at a test center or online. Confirm fees, locations, and cancellation rules on the official page.

Fingerprints / Live Scan

California residents use electronic Live Scan fingerprinting through CDI's approved vendor (Capital Live Scan). Follow CDI's individual resident application instructions and keep your receipt for the license file.

Apply for license (CDI)

After you pass the exam and complete Live Scan, finish your producer application (commonly through Sircon/NIPR) and pay the filing fee CDI lists for your license type. Confirm current fees and steps on CDI pages.

Life vs Life & Health: which exam?

Life-only: about 75 questions, about 105 minutes, 60% pass (confirm on PSI / CDI objectives).
Life, Accident & Health or Sickness (combined): 150 questions, 195 minutes, 60% pass.
Choose based on the license authority you intend to apply for with CDI. Confirm the exact exam name on PSI before you book.

Exam day checklist

Acceptable ID matching your PSI registration name (confirm current ID rules on PSI).
Arrive early; leave phones and study materials outside the secure area.
Soft timing guide (confirm on PSI / CDI objectives before exam day): combined Life & A&H is 150 questions / 195 minutes; single-line exams are shorter (about 75 questions / 105 minutes).
Know your appointment confirmation and test center address.
Plan a calm paced pass: flag hard items, return if time allows.

After you pass: job boards

GetLicensedCA is not a jobs product. These are ordinary public job boards you can search after you are licensed.

Since January 1, 2026 (AB 943), California no longer requires the old 20-hour prelicensing course for Life/A&H. You still need a CDI-approved 12-hour Ethics and California Insurance Code course before the license is issued. GetLicensedCA is exam prep only and does not provide that course. Confirm scheduling, fees, and forms on CDI and PSI.
