How Many Questions on the California Life and Health Exam?
· By GetLicensedCA · Nine North Solutions LLC
If you are counting questions before you book, here is the short version for the California Life & Health insurance exam path.
Life-Only Agent (LO): 75 questions, 105 minutes.
Accident and Health Agent (AH): 75 questions, 105 minutes.
Combined Life, Accident and Health or Sickness: 150 scored questions, 195 minutes. PSI may also mix in up to about 10 unscored experimental items. Those do not count toward your score, but they do use clock time.
Every producer exam, including these, needs a 60 percent score to pass. That is CDI's rule, not a prep-site rumor.
Where the numbers come from
CDI publishes the question counts and time windows on its Examinations: Time Limit and Number of Questions page. PSI's Candidate Information Bulletin for California insurance examinees lists the same 150 and 195 for the combined exam, and 75 and 105 for each single-line exam.
The bulletin also explains experimental questions. Expect a small block of unscored items, generally up to about 10 percent of the scored total. You will not be told which ones they are.
Spanish-language versions of Life, Accident and Health, and the combined exam use the same question counts and times.
What 60 percent means in practice
On the combined exam, 60 percent of 150 scored questions is 90 correct. On a 75-question Life-Only or A&H-Only exam, 60 percent is 45 correct.
You get a pass or fail on screen when you finish, and PSI emails a score report. If you fail, the emailed report includes a diagnostic of how many questions you answered correctly.
There is no separate state-only score like some other states use. One overall percentage decides it.
Life-Only vs Accident and Health vs combined
Life-Only covers life and annuity authority. Accident and Health covers sickness, bodily injury, accidental death, and disability income. The combined exam is how most people qualify for both license types in one sitting.
CDI lets you select both Life-Only and Accident and Health on the exam registration and on the Sircon application, then pay one license filing fee when you apply for both together. Details sit in getlicensedca.com/articles/life-vs-life-and-health-california.
If you only need one line, sit the matching 75-question exam. Do not sit combined just because the bigger number looks more official.
How this should change your study plan
One hundred fifty scored questions in 195 minutes is about 1.3 minutes per question if you use the whole clock. That is enough time if you are not inventing answers for topics you never practiced.
Start with a free timed practice test at getlicensedca.com/diagnostic so the length feels normal. Then drill weak areas and finish with the Full Exam Simulator (150 questions, CA format) before you spend the PSI fee.
