Failed the California Life Exam? What to Do Next
· By GetLicensedCA · Nine North Solutions LLC
Failing stings. It is also common. CDI's Curriculum Board packet for October 15, 2026 shows first-time English pass rates on the combined Life/Accident/Health exam around 59 percent for January through August 2026. Plenty of solid future agents are in the other 41 percent on attempt one.
What you do in the next week matters more than the fail itself.
Read the score report before you rebook
PSI shows pass or fail on screen when you end the exam and the survey. An emailed score report follows. On a fail, that email includes a diagnostic of how many questions you answered correctly.
Write down the weak areas in plain words. Do not book a retake the same afternoon unless your practice scores were already comfortably above 60 percent and nerves alone explain the day.
Retake rules you need
To retest, you register and pay again through PSI at https://test-takers.psiexams.com/cadi. There is no multi-week lockout after a single fail.
California Insurance Code section 1682 bars an examinee who fails the same examination type 10 times from taking that exam again for 12 months from the last fail. Combined Life and Accident/Health attempts count with Life attempts toward the Life-agent exam limit. Do not burn attempts while guessing.
Cancel or reschedule at least two business days ahead if you need to move a seat, or you forfeit the fee.
A simple rebuild
Day 1: cold timed set. Mark every miss.
Days 2 to 4: drill only the weak topics from CDI's License Examination Objectives. Use short sets, then explain each miss out loud.
Days 5 to 6: mixed timed blocks that look like the real length.
Day 7: Full Exam Simulator (150 questions, CA format) if you are on the combined path, or a full 75-question timed set for Life-Only.
Only rebook when timed practice clears 60 percent with room to spare. Details for a week-long plan sit in getlicensedca.com/articles/california-life-health-exam-7-day-retake-plan.
