Medicare Supplement and Long Term Care on the California Life and Health Exam
· By GetLicensedCA · Nine North Solutions LLC
Senior products are not a tiny side quest on the Accident and Health side of the California Life & Health insurance exam. The A&H License Examination Objectives put 15 questions on senior health products inside the 45-question medical expense block. Long-term care gets its own 4-question section.
Senior health products on the outline
Expect Medicare Parts A and B basics, Medicare Supplement (Medigap) ideas including California open enrollment references in the objectives, Medicare Advantage models, Part D concepts like creditable coverage and the coverage gap at a high level, and consumer help themes such as HICAP.
You do not need to memorize every CMS memo. You do need the definitions and consumer-facing rules the objectives list.
Long-term care on the outline
Know levels of care (skilled, intermediate, custodial), care settings (nursing home, assisted living, RCFE, home care, hospice, respite, adult day care), suitability themes, and that California has specific producer training before LTC sales.
Who can sell LTC after licensing
CDI's FAQ: licensees with both Life and Accident and Health, or Accident and Health alone, may sell long-term care after completing training in Insurance Code section 10234.93. Life-only agents have a narrow path for certain accelerated death benefit riders that require personal care services, not broad LTC product sales.
Training pattern in the FAQ: 8 hours in each of the first four 12-month periods, then 8 hours prior to each renewal. Partnership LTC has additional classroom requirements.
Practice question 1
Question: How many senior health product questions sit in the Accident and Health License Examination Objectives?
Answer: 15 questions within the medical expense section.
Practice question 2
Question: How many long-term care questions does the A&H outline assign?
Answer: 4 questions (5 percent of the 75-question A&H exam).
Practice question 3
Question: Can a Life-Only licensee freely sell stand-alone long-term care policies in California?
Answer: No. Broad LTC sales require Accident and Health authority (alone or with Life) plus required LTC training. Life-only authority for certain accelerated death benefit riders is narrower.
Practice question 4
Question: Does passing the California Life & Health insurance exam complete LTC training?
Answer: No. Complete the statutory LTC training before marketing LTC products.
Practice question 5
Question: Why do Medicare Supplement questions often mention open enrollment?
Answer: Federal and California rules create windows when applicants have stronger guarantee-issue protections. The objectives specifically point examinees to California Insurance Code references on open enrollment and application questions.

Trap: mixing Advantage and Supplement rules
Medicare Supplement plans work alongside Original Medicare. Medicare Advantage replaces Original Medicare with a private plan model. Mixing enrollment rules is a classic miss on senior-product items.
Trap: ignoring Part D creditable coverage
Objectives call out lifetime premium penalties when someone goes without creditable prescription coverage after eligibility. You do not need a pharmacist's depth. You do need the consumer consequence.
Trap: LTC authority assumptions
Holding a Life-Only license is not a free pass to market stand-alone LTC. Check authority plus section 10234.93 training before you advertise care planning packages.
