California Life and Health Exam Cheat Sheet: The Numbers to Know in 2026

This sheet is a memory aid for numbers that show up in planning and on California code questions. It is not a substitute for CDI's License Examination Objectives or PSI's bulletin.

Exam format numbers

Life-Only: 75 questions, 105 minutes.

Accident and Health: 75 questions, 105 minutes.

Combined Life, Accident and Health: 150 scored questions, 195 minutes, plus up to about 10 unscored experimental items.

Pass mark: 60 percent for producer exams.

Vendor: PSI. Schedule: https://test-takers.psiexams.com/cadi.

Languages: English and Spanish for these Life and A&H exams (CDI also offers other languages for many producer exams).

Life objective weights (75-question Life exam)

General Insurance 22 (30%). Life Insurance 49 (65%). Riders 4 (5%). Annuities inside life: 8 questions.

Accident and Health objective weights (75-question A&H exam)

General Insurance 18 (25%). Medical/disability concepts 4 (5%). Medical expense 45 (60%) including senior products 15. Disability income 4 (5%). Long-term care 4 (5%).

Money numbers

Exam fee $55. PSI convenience fee $43 (waived at CDI Los Angeles site). License filing $188 (Life, A&H, or both together on first filing). Live Scan $74. Appointment notice $32. Renewal $188 for Life and/or A&H on the two-year term.

Education numbers

12-hour Ethics and California Insurance Code course required before issuance, including 1 hour on fraud (Insurance Code section 1749).

20-hour prelicensing course for Life/A&H: repealed effective January 1, 2026 (AB 943).

CE after licensing: 24 hours per two-year term including 3 hours ethics with 1 hour fraud for Life and/or A&H (section 1749.33).

Annuity training: 8 hours initial before selling, 4 hours each renewal (Life licensees).

LTC training: 8 hours in each of the first four 12-month periods, then 8 hours each renewal for qualifying licensees under section 10234.93.

Process numbers

Exam valid 1 year from pass date (section 1676(a)).

Arrive 30 minutes early for PSI.

Cancel PSI at least 2 business days ahead to keep the fee.

10 fails on the same exam type triggers a 12-month bar (section 1682).

Resident Live Scan after application submission.

Pass rate context

English combined Life/Accident/Health first-time pass rate about 59 percent for January through August 2026 (9,680 first-time takers) per CDI's October 15, 2026 Curriculum Board packet. Spanish-language first-time results are much lower. Treat 60 percent as a floor, not a target.

60 percent of 150 is 90. 60 percent of 75 is 45. Experimental items do not count toward those totals but still consume minutes.
